Framing Culture

Arlington Art Center, VA, 2009

Our proposal for this competition grows from a perspective that what is most valuable in a vital arts and cultural center is a framework that effectively facilitates and stimulates diverse creative expression, interpretation, and play. This framework should be more than merely the infrastructure that will physically and technologically support creative works and activities—it should be compelling and provocative in itself.

To avoid becoming tired or clichéd over time, however, the framework should not be self-consciously iconic or overly dramatic. Our project seeks to balance the roles of facilitating, invigorating, and developing the identity of this special place and institution.
